Setup for a Windows Machine

The GNS3 Network Simulator / Emulator for Windows

Go to https://gns3.com/ and click on “FreeDownload”.  You will be asked to sign up, so enter the details and continue.  Select the installer for your OS, and click on that version. After installing the GNS3 GUI, you need to return to this page and download the GNS3Virtual Machine.  To install the VM, you will first need to download and install your virtualization software, as described below.

Virtualization Software for Windows

Important – you need to find the free version of VMWare for Windows: go to https://my.vmware.com/en/web/vmware/free – desktop_end_user_computing vmware_workstation_player /12_0 and follow the instructions to download and install VMWare Workstation Player 12 for Windows.

Note you will also need to download and install the VIX API (free). After installing your virtualization software, install the GNS3 VM on it.

Terminal Software for Windows

Windows does not come with terminal software.  I recommend you download and install PuTTY by going to http://www.putty.org/ and following directions.

Wireshark for Windows

Although it is not absolutely necessary, I recommend you download your own copy of Wireshark, for your own OS.  Then you will be able to examine packet traces that have been previously collected and stored.  Go to https://www.wireshark.org/ and click on “Download”.  Follow the instructions to download and install Wireshark.
